Using the Character Lab

The Character Lab was built by Welzware. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to mattslyon. His work inspired it; he did not make it, has no involvement in it, and is not responsible for anything it produces.

Everything it writes is fiction

Characters are invented by an AI model, quickly, to be funny. They make up names, credentials, jargon, brands, measurements, statistics, and events. None of it is true, none of it is research, and none of it describes any real person. The confidently technical parts are the least true parts. Do not rely on any of it for anything.

What you can ask for

Premises about hobbies, habits, gear, jobs, subcultures, and the opinions people volunteer. The joke is aimed at what someone chose, which is where the comedy is anyway.

Every premise is screened before a character is written. The lab will decline one that:

• makes race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or a medical condition the target
• uses a slur, or casts a group as subhuman, criminal, or deserving of harm
• is sexually explicit, or involves anyone under 18
• asks for a character who commits, plans, or glorifies real violence
• is aimed at one identifiable private individual

Screening is automatic and imperfect. It will occasionally refuse something harmless — rephrase it and try again.

What you write

You keep whatever you type. By using the lab you allow it to be processed as described in the privacy page and, if you choose to share, published on a share page. Anything can be removed on request, or at the operator’s discretion, without notice.

Availability

Free, provided as-is, with no warranty of any kind. There are hourly limits per visitor. It may be slow, wrong, or unavailable, and it may change or stop at any time.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Welzware is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of this site or anything it generates. It is a joke generator.
